Check out some of our helpful tips, tricks, and advice on all things painting!

In the world of premium painting, one product silently does more than its fair share of the work — primer.
It doesn't get the glory. It’s rarely talked about on Pinterest boards or in design magazines. But ask any experienced professional what separates a paint job that fails in two years from one that still looks sharp after ten, and you’ll hear one word: primer.
To most people, primer is that white coat you apply before color — something basic, boring, maybe even skippable. But primer is anything but optional.
Here’s what quality priming accomplishes:
Primer forms a molecular bridge between the surface and the paint. On slick or glossy surfaces like cabinetry or previously painted trim, primer ensures your finish doesn’t peel or flake. Without it, even the most expensive paint will eventually let go.
Walls, especially after patching or drywall repair, are uneven in porosity. Some parts absorb more paint, creating blotches or “flashing.” Primer locks down the surface so paint lays evenly and the color stays true.
Smoke stains, tannins from wood, watermarks — all of these can bleed through paint. A high-quality stain-blocking primer seals these off permanently. Without it, you’ll be painting again in six months.

There’s no “universal” solution. A primer that works great on drywall may not work on wood, metal, or tile. At Total Quality Painting, we match the primer to the surface, every time:
Wood trim and cabinetry? We might use an oil-based bonding primer.
Water-stained ceilings? Shellac-based primer seals and dries in minutes.
Exterior stucco? We go for high-alkaline masonry primers that resist efflorescence.
Luxury surfaces like Fine Paints of Europe projects? We use Euro-grade primers with ultra-fine pigments for glass-smooth finishes.
We’ve walked into homes where the paint is blistering off the trim or bubbling near the shower. In 90% of cases, it wasn’t the topcoat that failed — it was the prep. More specifically, the primer step was skipped or done wrong.
We don’t take those risks.
At Total Quality Painting, we treat primer like a product that matters — because it does. It’s not an extra charge. It’s not a corner to cut. It’s a fundamental part of a paint system designed to look better and last longer.
Then you want a primer-first approach. And not just any primer — the right one for your surface, your environment, and your vision.
